Cancun Fly Fishing

Fly fishing is another great way to experience the world-famous fishing excursions of Cancun, Mexico. With fly fishing, you will use an ancient method of fishing to lure your catch in shallow waters in and around the Nichupte Lagoon off the coast of Cancun. This method of luring your catch uses artificial flies as the main lure. The “flies” are especially constructed using a variety of materials such as fur, feather, and thread to look like different types of fish prey. Fly fishing is a method of fishing that uses the bare minimum of fishing gear.

For many, the seeming simplicity of fly fishing makes it a preferred type of fishing. In Cancun, fly fishing has become quite popular over the past few decades with both novice and expert anglers. The shallow waters off the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula are filled with fish populations that are targeted in fly fishing excursions. Fly fishing is typically done in waters that are about one foot deep, making these kind of Cancun fishing charters particularly unique. Places like the popular Nichupte Lagoon (which is right by the Hotel Zone in Cancun) and the island of Isla Blanca (just north of the heart of Cancun) have plenty of excellent areas for fly fishing.

Like all fishing excursions in Cancun, fly fishing offers a large variety of fish species to target. The most common shallow-water species of Cancun that you catch on a fly fishing trip include permit, tarpon, snook and bonefish. Out of these four main species, permit and bonefish are particularly prevalent in the spring and summer months while tarpon and snook are found in abundance throughout the entire year. Since the waters off the coast of Cancun are warm throughout the year, large populations of fish species can be found during spring, summer, winter or fall. There is no bad time to go fishing in Cancun and the other areas of the Yucatan Peninsula.
